Bangladesh Jatiya Andha Kalyan Somiti (BJAKS), Comilla was established in 1969 by some social workers, doctors, journalists, lawyers with a view to giving Eye care services to the rural people.

In 1969 a mobile Eye camp was first arranged by some physicians and social workers of Comilla town to provide essential services to the patients, suffering from different eye related diseases. In that camp awareness was created among the patients about various eye related diseases.

BJAKS, Comilla Sight Savers International(SSI) foreign assistance was started in 1991 aiming at prevention of childhood blindness, elimination of their nutrition deficiency and delivery of essential eye services to children under 5 years.

BJAKS, Comilla became registered under social welfare department. The organization started providing service free of cost to disadvantaged children. In 1993 a programme aiming at greater efficiency was started. It worked to identify urgent patients and direct them towards service locations.Nutritions classes were taken in a rented house in Comilla town. In 1994 a project titled “Modular Eye Care Programme (MEC) was started with assistance from the Royal Common Wealth Society for the Blind (RCSB).

The activities of the project included; (a) Holding a daily eye service camps at different places of the districts (b) Delivery of one time service in a week to the patients. (c) Examination of eye sight of school students (d) Awareness about eye diseases and (e) Free eye services. In the following after two years public demand increased and in 1996 project area was extended to cover 38 Thanas of 8 districts.

Bangladesh Jatiya Andha Kalya Somiti (BJAKS), Comilla with the help of Sight Savers Internaitional, launced “Moduler Eye Care (MEC)” programme in 1994 with a view to delivering the following services:

1) Hospital services.
2) Eye Clinics
3) Under 5 Clinics (1991-2000)
4) Community and Patients Screening Programme (PSP)
5) Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) started in 2000.
6) Primary Eye Care (PEC) training with the Govt. started from 2002.

Bangladesh Government (Social Services Department) supports and recognizes the need for comprehensive eye care service. A groundbreaking partnership between the Government (Social Welfare Ministry) & BJAKS, Comilla led to the creation of an eye hospital.

This is the first time the Government is helping an NGO like BJAKS, Comilla. Land was donated by BJAKS. Then the Government financed the infrastructure or a training institute and Eye hospital.The outcome of the project has helped many People not to be burden to society.

The building was inaugurated on 24th December,2003.
